We’re here to identify knowledge gaps and conduct industry-led, self-funding research in the fields of Earth observation (EO), geospatial science and remote sensing technologies.
Xerra Earth Observation Institute builds tangible products and services using their research capabilities in Earth Observation (EO) and remote sensing technologies. Our headquarters are in the beautiful town of Alexandra in Central Otago.
Under our original name (Centre for Space Science Technology) we were a successful applicant in the Regional Research Institutes Initiative, administered by the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). We received establishment funding from MBIE, enabling us to stand on our own and actively contribute to the wider science community.
We work with science partners and customers to engage in research, which not only contributes to the worldwide body of knowledge, but also delivers a return on investment for the users of our EO products and services.
EO is a burgeoning industry in New Zealand, enabling market leaders to harness the power of perspective and gain a competitive advantage.
Recognising the potential EO can offer a wide range of industries, we’re keen to support the development of New Zealand’s space ecosystem and EO market. We see the broad opportunities the space industry can provide, and we know that as a country we have something unique to offer the international community.
In order to be successful we must be pro-active and focused, like many of the customers we work with. As such, we have designed our organisation to be nimble — without sacrificing the efficacy of our work, and collaborative — without sacrificing our vision.
Why we’re here
Beyond being here to conduct research with a pathway to commercialisation, we are here to support evidence-informed decision making that will leave this planet in a better place than we found it. It’s no easy feat — but the way we see it, we have no other option. For the sake of future generations we must up our game, and be better stewards of our natural environment.
Everything we do at Xerra comes back to kaitiakitanga, or guardianship of our land, water and sky — from the suppliers and partners with whom we choose to work, to the projects to which we commit ourselves.
If it’s a problem that needs to be solved to better protect our natural resources, and it can benefit from EO, we’ll throw our hat in the ring.
If it means working together with others who share our same values, we’re up for that too. The only way we are going to change the course of history is by working together, in new and sometimes unconventional ways, to solve big problems.
We’re putting our best selves forward in pursuit of a common vision – to build a sustainable future through the power of science.
